Electrostatic spray painting is the process whereby a metal surface is sprayed with electrically charged paint. The electrical charge is obtained by attaching a negatively charged electrode to the metal object. A positively charged electrostatic spray coating is then applied to the surface. These opposite charges create a magnetic attraction that draws the paint onto the surface. There are many reasons why professional painters use electrostatic paint applications. Here are three things we love about electrostatic painting.

1. Electrostatic Spray Painting Reduces Overspray

As mentioned before, electrostatic spray painting involves opposite electrical charges resulting in a magnetic attraction. This magnetic attraction means that the paint is actually drawn to the surface to be painted. Being that little to no paint is lost as overspray, you can save a substantial amount of money.

The same magnetic attraction that reduces overspray also facilitates even coverage. All of the paint particles have a positive charge. These like charges cause the particles to repel one another when sprayed onto the surface. Because of this, the paint spreads out evenly. For that reason, you won’t need as many coats of paint to achieve a neat and uniform look.

2. Electrostatic Coatings Can Protect Your Metal Surfaces From Damage

Painting not only adds appeal but also serves as a protective coating. In the case of metal, protecting it from the elements is crucial. Whenever chemical reactions between metal and environmental factors occur, corrosion can be the result. There are various types of corrosion, and some of them are predictable. That’s where we come in.

While it is impossible to completely eliminate the onset of rust and other forms of corrosion—unless you’re working with a noble metal—it can be controlled, and we can reduce its rate of appearance. One of the ways our professional painting contractors do that is by using electrostatic spray painting.

3. Painting Is an Environmentally Friendly Process

Overspray is reduced because electrostatic paint and the surface to be painted have opposite electrical charges. Because of this, the amount of paint particles that are emitted into the air is greatly reduced as well. Using earth-friendly methods not only benefits our future generations, but it can also help us in the present. Upon being certified as an environmentally conscious company by the GBCI, you could be eligible for certain perks and benefits.

Electrostatic spray painting is an awesome way to save money, weatherproof your facility, and be environmentally friendly.
