Painting Concrete Walls and Steel Beams at a Wisconsin Dairy Plant

Thursday, May 20, 2021

Applying new paint to food processing facilities requires safe, professional work. Below we will talk about how Lakeside Painting safely removed paint removal and applied new coatings at Wisconsin dairy facility.

For this project, Crystal Farms' Lake Mills dairy plant needed new paint for the facility's concrete walls and steel beams. It included neither doors and frames nor any galvanized or stainless steel surfaces.

The walls needed a new coat of paint to comply with an internal audit. The company call us and knew that we were busy. But the same day we took a look at the plant with the facility manager, completed an estimate, and assembled a crew that weekend to complete the job.

Containment of Equipment

When we arrived, the plant had already worked to contain debris and paint by wrapping the dairy processing equipment in plastic. This proactive approach isn't the norm but we were happy to see it, as it meant that it would reduce our own preparation so we could get to the painting more quickly.

Painting the Concrete Walls & Steel Beams

To prep the walls and beams for painting, we sand-blasted and used hand tools to remove loose, failing coatings and debris. This also worked to profile the surface to properly receive the new coatings.

Next, we applied two coats of PPG Epoxy Block Fille to new concrete block surfaces. We then spot-primed the exposed steel and any rusted surfaces on the beams, before applying one coat of PPG Amerlock 2. In applying the new coatings to the concrete walls and steel beams, we used a combination of brush, spray, and roller.

Project Cleanup

After paint application, Lakeside Painting always does a thorough cleanup. For food processing facilities like this dairy plant, we clean up and paint and debris.

However, the dairy plant did a hygiene clean after we wrapped the project. This is a standard procedure for all food processing facilities.
