Refinishing Vinyl Tile Floor at the Grafton Water Treatment Plant

Many stores and commercial office spaces feature a type of flooring called vinyl composition tile, or VCT. Highly durable, VCT floors can handle a high amount of foot traffic and are generally easy to clean.

Despite their durability and ease of cleaning, VCT floors must be maintained with periodic stripping and reapplication of wax. This maintenance fee can be high but Lakeside Painting uses a product called NeverStrip that allows us to seal VCT floors with a coating that is more robust than wax, while delivering savings to our customers.

As the product name suggests, once NeverStrip is applied to VCT, the floors don't have to be stripped again. Maintenance is then about occasionally replying the coating.

Stripping Vinyl Tile Floors

Before stripping the VCT floor coating, we protected all surfaces that were not to be coated with tape and plastic. Next,
we stripped the vinyl tile flooring of its existing wax and residue.

Being that the VCT was quite old in the facility hallway, it took a bit of elbow grease to remove the wax. Upon completion, the floor was ready for application of the new coating.

Refinishing Vinyl Tile Floors

The first step in refinishing the VCT floor was applying NeverStrip's Micron Primer with a spray bottle and a microfiber pad. We applied the primer twice for a higher gloss finish.

Once the second round of primer was dry, we applied one coat of NeverStrip Clear Satin coating, again with a spray bottle and microfiber pad. To give the VCT floor more sheen or "gloss," we used a high speed burnisher to buff the the floor and coating.

In the photo slideshow below, you can see the application of the primer and clear satin coating with the spray bottle and microfiber pad, followed by the buffing.

VCT Flooring Professionals

While it might be tempting to have a maintenance worker strip and refinish VCT flooring, it's best to go with professionals for this type of work. As we noted, stripping old wax requires not only the right equipment but expert knowledge and experience with the product.
