Things to Consider When Painting a Room

Monday, September 30, 2019

Summer is over and we're in the midst of fall. It's that time of year for indoor projects and maintenance. Since the cold months are upon us, perhaps it's time to brighten up the den, a spare room/office, or even the kitchen.

There are a few variables to consider when changing the color in a room:

  • Is there art on the walls
  • Is the lighting warm or cool
  • How big is the room
  • Does the furniture have muted tones or lots of color
  • Are there any decorative features

Once you have considered these factors take a moment to consider how you might want to shift the energy in the room. Do you want it to be calmer or brighter? If you are looking to brighten things up consider using warmer colors like: yellow, orange or even red. If you want a calming effect use cooler colors like a soft blue or even avocado green. Keep in mind that high-trafficked walls last longer with a satin or gloss finish.

After the color has been chosen test it on the wall. Allow it to dry and settle.

If you're happy with the color it's time to prep the room:

  • Move out furniture (if possible)
  • Cover floors with drop clothes
  • Prim the walls
  • Brush along the trim and baseboards
  • Use at least two coats of paint
