Front doors: they keep you safe, and they’re one of the first things visitors notice. If you reside in southeast Wisconsin and you’d like to give your home a facelift by painting or refinishing the entry door, look no further than Lakeside Painting.

Choosing a Color

If you drive through a neighborhood, a handful of your neighbor’s doors are probably red. What’s up with that? While red adds a definite pop, it’s a little played out in our opinion.

Our professional painters can help you pick a color that best goes with your home’s exterior. If you have a specific paint color in mind, test it out by applying a small patch of it on your door. Take note of the color and how it changes during the day as lighting changes.

Selecting the Right Paint

If you have a glass or storm dorm that stands between your entry door and the elements, you can use either interior or exterior paint to paint your front door. However, if you don’t have a storm door, you’ll need to use exterior paint.

When painting doors, glossy paints tend to be the norm as they stand out and highlight architectural features. They are also better at resisting dings and nicks than flat or eggshell paint.

Perhaps the most important thing to note when painting or refinishing an entry door is whether you’re using latex or oil-based paint. When doing touch ups further on down the line, you’ll never want to use latex paint over oil paint or vice versa. It’s also important to note that the type of primer you use has to match the kind of paint you use.

Painting Prep Work

You can paint the door in place, or you can remove it from the hinges. It’s entirely up to you. Just keep in mind that if you don’t have a storm door, removing the door from its hinges will give bugs and debris full access to your home. Regardless of what you choose, be sure to remove all the hardware beforehand so that it won’t get splattered with paint.

Before you pull out that brush, it’s important to make sure that your door is clean. Use a wet rag to get rid of any dust, cobwebs, dirt, or dead bugs. Then, using a sander or sandpaper, remove any imperfections. Be sure that you swipe the door once more with a wet rag to remove the dust you created by sanding.
