Replacing Windows

Whenever you purchase a home, especially if it’s an older home, the replacement of windows often comes up in conversations. Not only do they upgrade the look of the house, but newer, more efficient windows can bring potential energy savings to homeowners.

While there is no specific answer as to how often you should replace your windows, you should be watchful, and make sure that there are no leaks or streaks on your walls or rotten wood around the window. These signs usually indicate that the seal around the window has broken. If this is the case, although the window itself might be salvageable, you will need to remove, reinstall, and adequately seal the window. A new frame may also be required.

Here are some signs that you may be in need of new windows.

Over-the-Top Energy Bills

Stand near your window in a T-shirt on a cold day. Does the space around you feel colder than the rest of the house? If the window is cold to the touch, that means that as soon as warm air from your heater gets near the window, it is being cooled down. That’s definitely a waste.

Another way to check the efficiency of your windows is to hold a candle by your window frames. Slowly move the candle around the window’s edges. If you notice that the candle flickers, drafts are coming in through the window frame, making your home colder, which, in turn, makes you use more energy to heat up your home’s interior.

Condensation Between Window Panes

Condensation on the outside of your windows is nothing to worry about. It is simply caused by external environmental factors. However, if you notice that there is condensation between the window panes, you need new windows or you need to have your existing windows resealed.

Faulty Operation

Check each window in your home for smooth operation. If your windows need to be pried or propped open or if they’re painted or swollen shut, it’s time for some new windows. Wooden windows tend to swell shut.

While replacing your windows can be costly, it is important for the safety of your home and energy savings further on down the line. Replacing Doors

With garage doors and side doors, most of us hardly ever use our front doors. Nevertheless, doors protect our homes from intruders and weather. Here are a few ways to determine if you need a new front door.

You Have to Pry Your Door Open

If you have a hard time opening and closing your door, it may be time for a replacement. If it sticks in the winter and easily opens during the summer, you can be sure that energy is being wasted as it rushes out of your door.

Sinking hinges are another issue to look for. Doors that stick to door jams mean that there are exposed areas on the edges of the door and this allows for cold or hot air from outdoors to seep into your home.

Dings and Rust on the Door

If you have a door made of steel, it may be particularly susceptible to dings and scratches. With those dings and scratches come rust and corrosion. If you notice that your door is particularly corroded, consider a replacement. After all, a corroded door does little to protect you from someone who really wants to kick it in.

Condensation Between the Window Panes

Just like windows, if you notice condensation between the glass panes on your door, it means that the seam is damaged. You might be able to remove the door and reinstall it correctly with a new seam. However, depending on the condition, you might need a new door altogether.
