Upgrading Kitchen Cabinets and Island for a Modern Look

In our residential work, we work closely with our customers to upgrade their home just as they want. This might mean a modern look with either a breezy, coastal design or a minimal and urban look. Other times Lakeside Painting works with our customers to give their home a vintage or rustic appearance.

A recent home project found Lakeside Painting's residential team giving our customer's kitchen a modern look. In this case, we refinished both the cabinets and island to accent the kitchen's white vaulted ceiling with exposed wooden support beams.

In the image slideshow, you can see the evolution of the kitchen cabinets and island, from the original wood finish to the modern look. You can also see how we masked off certain surfaces and areas of the kitchen to keep it clean.

Painting the Kitchen Cabinets

Originally, both the cabinets and the island had a dark, natural wood finish. To give the space a lighter and brighter look, but also make it more spacious, our customers opted for Benjamin Moore OC-17 White Dove paint (a pigmented conversion varnish).

Before painting, we caulked and filled nail holes where necessary, then applied a one-coat primer. All kitchen areas and surfaces not mean to be painted were masked off. Next, we painted the cabinets with two coats of the White Dove conversion varnish, using a combination of brush, spray, and roller.

To the eye, White Dove is a bit creamier looking than a flat white. Softly shaded but still luminous, it has a classic appearance, making it longtime color choice for trim and moldings.

Refinishing the Kitchen Island

To contrast and accent the newly white main cabinets, our customers selected Benjamin Moore HC-161 Templeton Gray for the kitchen island. This color is known for its versatility for both historical and modern spaces.

As with the main cabinets, our team applied a one-coat primer, then two coats of the Templeton Gray conversion varnish. Again, we masked off all areas there weren't to be painted, the applied the coating with brush, spray, and roller.

Final Thoughts

When finished, the gray of the kitchen island created a nice stylistic counterpoint to the cabinets' white hue. Both our customer and team were extremely pleased with the results.
